Mary, Undoer of a Trauma Bond
Based on the traditional Mary, Undoer of Knots Novena, this version is specific to releasing the chains of a trauma bond.
The Mary, Undoer of Knots novena is a beautiful and powerful prayer to help us untie the knots that keep us separated from not just Christ, but from thriving and living our lives to the fullest. As promised, I’ve created a PDF of this traditional novena, yet with a slight twist—special wording has been added to help us release unhealthy trauma bonds.
The devotion to Mary as the Undoer of Knots began in the 18th century, yet it’s actually much older than that. Around 1700, German painter Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner created an image of our Blessed Mother as depicted in Revelation 12:
And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery.
(Rev. 12:1-2)
As with the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Blessed Mother stands on a crescent moon (a symbol which holds profound meaning—read more in this article from the University of Dayton’s extensive “All About Mary” library). She’s also crushing the head of the serpent, the originator of lies and knots in our lives (Gen. 3:25). The Holy Spirit hovers above her head as angels encircle her in loving protection and admiration. Her attention is focused on the untying of a long, knotted ribbon, with patience and pondering deep in her loving expression.
The inspiration for this image is attributed to St. Irenaeus of Lyon (bishop and martyr, who died between the years of 200 and 203 A.D.). It was St. Irenaeus, in his work Adversus Haereses (Against Heresies), who not only noted the parallel St. Paul made between Adam and Christ, but took it one inspired step further. St. Irenaeus showed how our Blessed Mother is the new Eve, stating that “Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it.”
Using the novena that was born of this inspiration as my model, I’ve added specific wording to help you pray for a release of soul ties and trauma bonds.
